Press Release 12/03/2024

Delaware, Ohio – Community Arts Network is taking its evocative musical production, Camp

Delaware, on a statewide film tour after two powerful live performances earlier this year. Camp

Delaware explores the Civil War history of Delaware, Ohio, highlighting the USCT (United

States Colored Troops) training camp, where Black and white soldiers were separated by the

Olentangy River. The production has captivated audiences with its blend of historical storytelling

and original music, creating an emotional and educational experience that connects the past

with the present.

The first live performance took place at Ohio Wesleyan University in February, with a second

showing in Marysville in July 2024. Footage from these live events, along with additional scenes

filmed to deepen the historical narrative, has been compiled into a cinematic experience. Since

its completion, the film has been screened in Delaware at the Strand Theater, Columbus at the

Ohio History Connection, and Fremont at the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library and

Museums. Community Arts Network continues to expand its outreach, with upcoming

screenings in Dayton, Bowling Green, Athens, Massillon, and a return to Delaware.

“We’re thrilled to bring this unique and important part of Ohio history to communities across the

state,” said Mark Butler, representative of Community Arts Network. “Camp Delaware is more

than just a performance. It’s a journey into our shared history, inviting Ohioans to reflect on the

courage and resilience of those who served in the USCT.”

Educational and Community Impact

Proceeds from screenings support a scholarship fund for Ohio students pursuing higher

education in the performing arts. Community Arts Network awarded its first scholarship last July

to a Swanton High School student now attending Bowling Green State University.

The production includes original music by local artists Dylan Horn, Anne Gadd, Francine Butler,

Chris Gherman, and Scott Lee, who created pieces inspired by their research into Camp

Delaware’s history. Additionally, the second live production featured the authentic sounds of the

Civil War era, performed by the 73rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment Band, who dressed in

period uniforms and played instruments of that time.

Collaborative Research and Local Cast

Community Arts Network worked closely with the Delaware County Historical Society and the

Ohio History Connection to ensure historical accuracy. The research was guided by Dr. Kelly

Mezurek, author of For Their Own Cause, and Versalles Washington, author of Eagles on Their

Buttons, both of whom served as consultants.

The diverse cast features community members, including educators, reenactors, students,

clergy, a judge, and even a cast member reentering the performing arts world following incarceration,

demonstrating Community Arts Network’s commitment to inclusivity and second chances.
