Hotel Ribno is the first Slovenian zero waste hotel. After two years of introducing measures to reduce waste and ensure the separate collection of waste, Hotel Ribno has succeeded in achieving that 92% of the waste is collected separately. But this process required much more than just filling out forms. Without the commitment of the management and employees, who often weighed and examined the waste, it would not be possible to obtain such a title. It is crucial to change the entire operational policy and introduce measures such as placing bins for separate waste collection in hallways and offering food without packaging. Each and every step matters.

Hotel Ribno

A zero-waste society or a society with less municipal waste, they are supported by “Ecologists Without Borders in the national Zero Waste organisation for Slovenia, which is part of the Zero Waste Europe network.

The main purpose of the concept, which has been developing in more than 350 local communities around Europe, including the Slovenian municipalities of Bled, Ljubljana, Vrhnika, Log-Dragomer, Borovnica, Gorje, Radovljica, Slovenske Konjice and Žalec. Waste will always be produced, and the zero waste concept is merely a map of different paths to help us reduce the amount of waste. They are obviously on the right track, considering that, with concerted efforts, all the aforementioned municipalities have succeeded in preventing a total of 15,750 tonnes of mixed municipal waste from being generated, thereby saving 3 million EUR. A positive side effect of this project is the forging of ties and cooperation between all the stakeholders involved.

At the other end of Slovenia, the zero waste map has been used by the organisers of the Jurjevanje folklore festival in Bela Krajina, Art Camp and (Z)mešani festival. Infact, they have consistently promoted the separate collection of waste and have been introducing measures to prevent waste from being produced – they have been striving to reduce the use of plastic for one-time use and installing drinking water fountains at festival sites. Their responsible attitude to the environment also being reflected in the content of their programmes. All the aforementioned examples of good practice demonstrate that the zero waste concept is about much more than just waste. By selecting appropriate measures, we can reduce impacts on climate change, also due to reduced energy and water consumption and sustainable mobility. The alpha and omega of a successful transition to a zero waste society is communication.

Improved communication increases the level of services, providing a significant competitive edge. The trend towards green has also been demonstrated by other tourism providers, who have visited the Slovenian zero waste pearls and are following their example. Moreover, this trend is also reflected in the media, which can no longer overlook zero waste practices when covering environmental topics. Accordingly, records are being broken not only with the numbers of overnight stays but also with media coverage of zero waste, which has increased threefold in the past four years. This a good thing.

Slovenian gastronomy

When it comes to gastronomy, Slovenia has always followed the sustainability principles of the “from farm to fork” approach, focusing on seasonal, local, and organic dishes. But 2021 was a milestone. It was the year, when Slovenia became the European Region of Gastronomy, and also the year when restaurants and other food service providers were invited to join the green community of tourist destinations, accommodation providers, natural parks, tourist agencies, and tourist attractions, united under the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism.

Zero Waste tourists

As individuals, we can also contribute to reducing the impact of tourism on the environment; in 2011 the tourism industry was responsible for the generation of 48 tonnes of waste, accounting for 14% of all generated municipal waste at a global level. For sure should avoid the use of plastic items for one-time use, support environment-friendly accommodation  Surveys show that, when on holidays, people behave in a much more wasteful way, which is why we should reflect on how individual changes can help make a great impact together. With our green behaviour, we should set an example to others when travelling around the world and to foreign tourists in Slovenia.

Slovenia continues to fly the green flag and remains a green spot on the world map for a long time to come. They are on the right track.  For sure they can pride ourselves on being the only country in the world with a zero waste capital city, a zero waste hotel and zero waste events.

Back to the Past https://www.worldenvironment.tv/back-to-the-past-by-andrea-tucci/ Sun, 17 Mar 2024 10:03:37 +0000 https://www.worldenvironment.tv/?p=1480 by Andrea Tucci,

In 2016, international relations expert Alex de Waal, director of the World Peace Foundation at Tufts University in the United States, published an article in the New York Times, in which he argued that the times of mass famine were over, thanks above all to democratization of many countries and at the end of bloody conflicts. Evidently, he was wrong…

In 2016 the United Nations estimated that there were 130 million people in need of urgent aid. By the end of 2023 the figure had risen to 363 million, an increase of 180 percent. The true epicenter of the food crisis is the Horn of Africa.

Around 90 million people suffer from hunger in Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and, on the other side of the Red Sea, in Yemen. These countries have a long history of serious food shortages, but we have never seen them all sink into famine at the same time. Ethiopia, hit in the years 2020-2022 by a war that caused six hundred thousand deaths. Abandoned farms and crops, dead animals.

The drought and subsequent rains, which were too intense, have condemned more than 90 percent of the six million population to malnutrition. Two-thirds of the world’s hungry people live in conflict zones such as Sudan and Gaza or are trying to escape from there. Hunger has returned to threaten a dozen other countries, including Afghanistan, Syria and Mali.

The money allocated for aid is not enough. Until five years ago, the UN’s annual emergency appeals managed to be funded at 60 percent.

In 2023 this percentage has fallen to 35 percent and is expected to be even lower this year. The reasons why states donate less are various: from the higher cost of food products to the corruption scandals in which some humanitarian organizations have been involved (such as the USAID agency in Ethiopia) and which undermine trust in their interventions. But world hunger is not only a stain on consciences but also a threat to security. Famines can lead societies to collapse. Push millions of people to migrate. Fueling desperation and protests. And finally, topple governments.”

The conflict between Israel and Gaza has worsened the hunger and suffering of Palestinians in the region.

In recent weeks, the threat of famine has intensified in Gaza and 1.1 million children are at risk of starvation and severe malnutrition, with some facing the imminent danger of death.

Lately with the help of Open Arms, a Mediterranean rescue vessel,  there were already provided more than 37 million meals to families in war-torn Gaza by land, sea.

Chef José Andrés Founder and Chief Feeding officer of the World Central Kitchen (WCK) says: We want to help of the inhumane conditions endured by the Palestinian civilian population.

Workers have been unpacking the 200 tons of food aid on smaller boats off the shore of the Gaza City.

Over 30,000 lives lost to bombings and hundreds of thousands of people facing the threat of starvation due to the severe violations of human rights endured by the civilian population.

In 2010, Chef José Andrés, ready to use his culinary knowledge and talent to help, headed to Haiti following a devastating earthquake. Cooking alongside displaced families in a camp, he was guided on the proper way to cook black beans the way Haitians like to eat them.  He continues saying:” it wasn’t just about feeding people in need is just about listening, learning, and cooking side by side with the people impacted by the crisis”. This is the real meaning of comfort food, and it’s the core value that José, along with his wife Patricia, used at the center of founding World Central Kitchen.

Is been already seven years after José founded World Central Kitchen is focusing on resilience programs, investing in longer-term solutions, serving meals to people recovering from crisis every single day. Hurricanes, wildfires, tsunamis, and volcano eruptions took the team across the world, growing in knowledge and capacity with each crisis. Andrés says: “We respond providing nourishing meals for refugees Ukrainian families living through an unthinkable invasion and the constant threat of attack”.

Over the years, José and WCK teams have continued to learn, adapt, and build responses unique to each situation and community.

World Central Kitchen teams across the world remain deeply committed to serving delicious, chef-prepared meals to people with the dignity they deserve.

In 2019, José Andrés was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work.

Well “Chapeau” Mr. Andres!!!

The Allure of Investing in Art: A Canvas of Opportunities https://www.worldenvironment.tv/the-allure-of-investing-in-art-a-canvas-of-opportunities/ Sun, 04 Feb 2024 09:38:40 +0000 https://www.worldenvironment.tv/?p=1129 By Catalina Gaffo,

In the dynamic landscape of investment opportunities, art has emerged as a captivating and potentially lucrative asset class. Beyond the aesthetic pleasure it provides, art has become a tangible and valuable addition to diversified investment portfolios. In this article, we will explore the reasons behind the growing interest in investing in art, the potential benefits, and the considerations investors should bear in mind.

Traditionally, investors have sought refuge in stocks, bonds, and real estate to build wealth and hedge against market volatility. However, art presents itself as a unique alternative investment that often moves independently of traditional financial markets. Unlike stocks and bonds, which can be influenced by economic indicators and geopolitical events, the art market can be less correlated, offering a potential buffer against market fluctuations.

Art investments can play a crucial role in diversifying an investment portfolio. The value of art is influenced by various factors such as the artist’s reputation, historical significance, and trends in the art market. As a result, art investments may not always follow the same trajectory as traditional assets, helping to spread risk and enhance overall portfolio stability.

Investing in art allows individuals to own a tangible and aesthetically pleasing asset. Unlike stocks and bonds that exist in the digital realm, art provides a sensory experience and can be enjoyed on a daily basis. Owning a piece of art can bring a sense of fulfillment and cultural enrichment, making it a unique investment class that goes beyond mere financial gains.

One of the primary appeals of investing in art is the potential for significant appreciation in value over time. Successful art investments have yielded impressive returns, with the value of certain pieces skyrocketing as artists gain recognition or as particular art movements gain popularity. For instance, the works of renowned artists like Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, and Claude Monet have seen substantial appreciation over the years.

While art can be a rewarding investment, it comes with its own set of challenges and considerations. The art market can be subjective and influenced by ever-changing trends, making it essential for investors to conduct thorough research. Understanding the artist’s background, the historical context of the artwork, and the overall market trends is crucial for making informed investment decisions.

Art is often considered a long-term investment, and selling artworks may not be as straightforward as selling stocks. The art market’s liquidity can vary, and finding the right buyer for a particular piece may take time. Additionally, there are costs associated with art transactions, including auction fees, gallery commissions, and conservation expenses. Investors should be prepared for these costs and factor them into their overall return calculations.

These examples underscore the dynamic nature of the art market, where the value of contemporary artists can experience rapid ascension. As collectors and investors recognize the cultural and historical significance of these artists, the demand for their works continues to drive prices to new heights, highlighting the potential for substantial returns on art investments in the modern era

Jean-Michel Basquiat an American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent, gained prominence in the 1980s for his graffiti-influenced Neo-expressionist style. Despite a tragically short career, Basquiat’s works have seen a remarkable surge in value. In 2017, his untitled painting depicting a skull sold for a staggering $110.5 million at auction, highlighting the exponential growth in the value of his pieces.

Yayoi Kusama, Japanese contemporary artist, is known for her avant-garde installations and vibrant polka dot patterns, has experienced a significant increase in the value of her artworks. Her immersive installations, such as “Infinity Mirrored Rooms,” have garnered international acclaim. In recent years, the demand for Kusama’s work has surged, leading to impressive auction results and collaborations with major art institutions worldwide.

Kaws (Brian Donnelly), professionally known as Kaws, began as a graffiti artist and transitioned into the world of contemporary art. His unique blend of pop culture references and street art aesthetics has resonated with a global audience. Kaws’ sculptures and paintings have become highly sought after, with some pieces achieving multi-million-dollar sales at auctions. His growing influence in both the art and commercial spheres has contributed to the rapid appreciation of his works.

Banksy, known as the elusive street artist has gained international acclaim for his politically charged and socially conscious artworks. While Banksy’s identity remains a mystery, the value of his pieces has soared. Notably, his “Devolved Parliament,” featuring a roomful of chimpanzees as members of the British Parliament, fetched around £12 million at auction in 2019, significantly surpassing initial estimates.

Kehinde Wiley is renowned for his vibrant and bold portraits, and has risen to prominence in the contemporary art scene. Wiley gained widespread recognition for his official portrait of former U.S. President Barack Obama. The increased visibility from high-profile commissions has translated into heightened demand for his work. Collectors and art enthusiasts alike have shown a growing interest in Wiley’s unique blend of classical portraiture and modern themes, contributing to the appreciation of his artistic value.

While investing in art is an exciting venture that combines the aesthetic pleasure of owning unique creations with the potential for financial gains, thorough research and a strategic approach are essential as with any investment, Art can complement traditional investment portfolios, offering diversification and the potential for appreciation. While the art market poses its own set of challenges, the allure of investing in art lies in the prospect of creating a visually and financially rewarding legacy. As the art market continues to evolve, investors may find that adding a touch of creativity to their portfolios can yield both aesthetic and financial dividends.

Harnessing the Power of Clean Energy, a Sustainable Future https://www.worldenvironment.tv/harnessing-the-power-of-clean-energy-a-sustainable-future/ Sat, 03 Feb 2024 18:30:26 +0000 https://www.worldenvironment.tv/?p=1100 By Gabriella Porelli,

In the face of accelerating climate change and depleting fossil fuel reserves, the adoption of clean energy sources has become imperative for a sustainable future. Clean energy, derived from renewable resources such as sunlight, wind, water, and geothermal heat, offers a myriad of advantages that extend beyond environmental benefits. This article explores the numerous advantages of using clean energy and why it is a crucial step towards creating a greener and more sustainable world.

One of the most significant advantages of clean energy lies in its minimal environmental impact. Unlike traditional fossil fuels, which release harmful pollutants and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, clean energy technologies produce little to no air or water pollution. By reducing emissions, we can mitigate climate change, improve air quality, and protect ecosystems, promoting a healthier environment for both humans and wildlife.

The burning of fossil fuels is a major contributor to the rising levels of greenhouse gases, leading to global warming. Clean energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower generate electricity without emitting carbon dioxide and other pollutants. By transitioning to these renewable sources, we can significantly reduce our carbon footprint and combat climate change, preserving the planet for future generations.

Investing in clean energy helps nations reduce their dependence on imported fossil fuels. By harnessing domestic renewable resources, countries can enhance their energy security and reduce vulnerability to geopolitical tensions or fluctuations in global oil markets. This shift towards energy independence strengthens national economies and promotes a more resilient energy infrastructure.

The clean energy sector has emerged as a robust engine for job creation and economic growth. The transition to renewable energy technologies requires skilled workers in manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and research and development. As governments and businesses invest in clean energy initiatives, they stimulate economic activity, create jobs, and foster innovation, ultimately contributing to sustainable economic development.

The pursuit of clean energy has driven significant advancements in technology. Research and development in solar panels, wind turbines, energy storage systems, and smart grids have led to more efficient and cost-effective solutions. These innovations not only enhance the performance of clean energy systems but also have broader applications in various industries, fostering a culture of technological progress.

The cost of renewable energy has been steadily decreasing, making it increasingly competitive with traditional fossil fuels. Advances in technology, economies of scale, and government incentives have contributed to the affordability of clean energy solutions. As a result, businesses and consumers alike can benefit from cost-effective and sustainable energy alternatives, driving widespread adoption.

Embracing clean energy is not just a matter of environmental stewardship; it is a strategic and necessary step toward building a sustainable future. The advantages, ranging from environmental protection and mitigating climate change to economic growth and technological innovation, highlight the multifaceted benefits of transitioning to renewable energy sources. By prioritizing clean energy, we can pave the way for a more resilient, equitable, and environmentally conscious global energy landscape.

Catalonia declares drought emergency for Barcelona https://www.worldenvironment.tv/catalonia-declares-drought-emergency-for-barcelona/ Fri, 02 Feb 2024 07:58:05 +0000 https://www.worldenvironment.tv/?p=1050 by Andrea Tucci,

Rainfall in Spain’s Catalonia has been below average since the end of 2020. Residents are preparing for stricter limits on water use, swimming pools and farming. Residents of Catalonia in Spain are grappling with water limits and swimming pool bans as authorities declare a state of emergency over the historic drought.

On Wednesday, December 13, the local authorities eventually decided to cancel the whole event and, for the first time since 2006, refrain from organising an activity that consumed too much water (48,000 liters). The decision was taken “out of a sense of responsibility” and “to set an example” in the face of the “current serious climate situation.”

The regional executive will then have to take drastic measures to ensure drinking water supplies for the Barcelona metropolitan area and its 5.5 million inhabitants.

Barcelona has already been relying on Europe’s largest desalination plant for drinking water, and a sewage treatment and purification plant to make up for the drop in water from wells and rivers.

Catalonia officially entered the “pre-emergency” phase for drought, which lowers the daily use per person from 230 to 210 litres of water per day. That includes personal use as well as what town halls use per inhabitant for services. Catalonia’s water agency says that the average person in Catalonia consumes on average 116 litres per day for domestic use.

To preserve Barcelona’s 35,000 trees, the City Council is taking measures to prevent them from dying of thirst. Irrigation is being cut back, and groundwater is slowly replacing potable water. Lawns in areas without groundwater pipelines are no longer being watered. During the drought emergency, all lawn irrigation will be halted, and minimal amounts of groundwater will be used exclusively for watering trees and preserving historic gardens.

it’s also no longer allowed to wash a car on public roads using tap water. The fines for perpetrators are quite steep, up to €1000. Commercial car washing is only allowed when the used water is being recycled.

Tourism industry is also affected by the drought. Catalonia’s beautiful beaches and natural landscapes attract millions of tourists every year, but the water shortage may cause the quality of these attractions to deteriorate. This could lead to a decline in tourism and, therefore, revenue for the region.

if water reserves fall below 16 percent capacity, then Catalonia would enter into a full-blown drought “emergency” whereby water would be limited to 200 litres per person, and then potentially dropped down to 160 litres per person, and all irrigation in agriculture would require previous approval.

Unless it rains a lot, then Barcelona could need tankers to bring in drinking water.

“Unfortunately, we have to be prepared for every scenario, and we are close to needing boats to bring in water if the situation that we have seen over the past months continues,” Catalonia regional president Pere Aragonès said during a trip to South Korea on Wednesday.

So, let’s embark on a culinary journey to create a bowl of Mushroom Soup that will make your winter evenings even more delightful.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound (450g) assorted mushrooms (cremini, button, shiitake), cleaned and sliced
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups vegetable or chicken broth
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Saute Mushrooms: In a large pot, melt butter and heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and garlic, sauté until softened and fragrant. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they release their moisture and become golden brown.
  2. Make Roux: Sprinkle the flour over the mushroom mixture and stir well to create a roux. Cook for 2-3 minutes, allowing the flour to cook and eliminate the raw taste.
  3. Add Broth: Gradually pour in the vegetable or chicken broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
  4. Simmer and Season: Stir in the dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Let the soup simmer for 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the soup to thicken.
  5. Add Creamy Goodness: Pour in the whole milk and heavy cream, stirring to combine. Simmer for an additional 5-10 minutes, ensuring the soup is heated through.
  6. Blend (Optional): For a smoother texture, use an immersion blender to puree the soup until it reaches your desired consistency. Alternatively, transfer a portion of the soup to a blender and blend until smooth before returning it to the pot.
  7. Adjust Seasoning: Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary. If the soup is too thick, you can add more broth or milk to reach your desired consistency.
  8. Serve: Ladle the creamy mushroom soup into bowls, garnish with chopped fresh parsley, and enjoy the warm, comforting flavors of winter in every spoonful.

This Mushroom Soup is the perfect companion for a chilly winter night, providing a delightful balance of earthy mushrooms and creamy goodness. So, embrace the season and indulge in the warmth of this soul-satisfying dish.
